The event we have always known as the District Fours underwent a name change this year to be called the Open Fours and along with this a new event was created called the Senior Fours.

To qualify for the Senior Fours all players in the team must be over the age of 60 years. This inaugural event had 30 entries and commenced on Monday 30th January at Bateau Bay and Everglades in very hot conditions. The Quarter Finals were held on Tuesday at The Entrance.

The Open Fours was run simultaneously with the Senior Fours. Monday 30th January saw the commencement of this event at Halekulani and Everglades with 42 teams. Tuesday’s games were held at Ettalong Memorial.

It was great to see how Lawn Bowls is a sport that can be played by all. One of The Entrance's team, skipped by Sue Gemmell, had wheelchair bowler Donna Ellis playing as second.[see photo] The ladies won their first two rounds but went out in the third round.

Unfortunately the Semi Finals for both these events due to be played on Thursday at Avoca Beach, were washed out as was the rescheduled attempt on Friday.

The Semi Finals and Final were rescheduled to Monday 6th February at The Entrance. Early morning saw blue skies however before the ladies even took to the greens the clouds rolled in and so did very strong and persistent wind. By late morning the sun came out but the wind remained. By the afternoon the clouds had rolled in again.

The standard of play displayed by these ladies in such adverse conditions was a site worth seeing for all the spectators who braved the elements to come along and watch.

It was a most unusual sight to see two finals playing side by side with the same 2 clubs competing. i.e Terrigal .v. Avoca Beach in both finals.
