2013 Junior Stars of the Future
On Sunday 14th April Wyong Bowling Club was the venue for exhibition matches featuring up and coming juniors Ellen Ryan [Goulburn Bowling Club] and Maddison Fennell [previously Gwandalan now Munmorah Bowling Club].
Ellen is 16 years old. She has been in the Australian U18 squad for 4 years. Represented the state for 3 years at Nationals, quad series, NSW v Qld. She has won numerous events including the U18 Australian Open Singles in 2012. Recently she was part of the Australian U18 team who defeated New Zealand in March this year.
Maddison is 16 years old and is a rising star on the lawn bowls scene. In her short career, Maddison was runner up in Gwandalan Bowling Clubs Major Singles. In June 2012 she competed in her first major tournament, the Bowls NSW U18 Girls Singles and Pairs Championships. She has been selected in the 30 strong U25's National Training Squad [NSW/ACT] under renowned coach Gary Willis.
Ellen and Maddison played singles first of all. What great bowls were witnessed by the 80 + spectators who had come along for this event. They played 2 sets with Ellen just winning over Maddison. The girls then played a further 5 end set for fun, bowling with their 'left hands'. Put some of us regular bowlers to shame.
Ellen and Maddison then teamed up to play pairs against Wyong players Judy Wheatly and Sue Manning. The spectators really got into the spirit of the event encouraging all players. There were comments from the players and spectators with Pres. Carl roaming around with the microphone. This all added to the atmosphere of the day.
After a short break Wyong Rugby League Club Chairman Bob Wells teamed up with the girls to play against Pres.Carl who teamed up with Sue and Judy. What a fun time.
Well done to Wyong Bowling Club with the support of their mother club Wyong Rugby League Club to put on this day. Lets hope we see more of our promising Juniors in the future.
