The 2011 State Singles at District Level were played from 9th to 13th May. Some exciting bowls were played throughout the week, starting on Monday at Avoca Beach and Bateau Bay in very cold conditions. Tuesday play was at The Entrance. Again the conditions were windy and cold but there was some very close matches.
The quarter finals were played in the afternoon. Results were Tracy Ward [Ettalong Mem.] defeated Norma Barry [The Entrance]; Deidre Windshuttel [Avoca Beach] defeated Pat Neal [Umina Beach], Judy King[Everglades] defeated Lauren Williams [Ettalong Mem.] and Dianne McInnes [Halekulani] defeated Arleen Jackson [Bateau Bay]. What great games all round.
The Semi-finals were held at Davistown RSL on Thursday morning. The players had to battle the wind but conditions were better than earlier in the week. Again we saw some tremendous bowls. Judy King defeated Dianne McInnes and Tracy Ward defeated Deidre Windshuttel.
The final was played at Terrigal on Friday 13th between Judy and Tracy. ‘Black Friday’ certainly didn’t affect the play. The weather was kind, with sunshine and quite warm conditions. I marked this match and the quality of the bowls was great. Some ends each bowl that came down changed who was holding shot. Congratulations to both players, who played the game with great sportsmanship and friendship.
The eventual winner was Judy King from Everglades. This is the second time Judy has won this event, having won previously in 2009. Judy will now go on to the D Group playoffs to be held at Maitland City bowling club from July 25th.
