2014 OPEN FOURS and SENIOR FOURS

The State Open Fours and Senior Fours at District level commenced on 28th January.   Venues on Tuesday were Halekulani, The Entrance, Wyong and Ettalong.    The Quarter and Semi Finals for the Open Fours were played at Mingara and Davistown RSL hosted  the Senior Fours.   Great bowls were seen at all these venues. It was certainly a strong field in each event and all teams put in top performances to progress to the final.

The finals were played  on January 31, at Gosford City Club.  The finalists were:

Open Fours:

Avoca Beach: Judy King, Karen Croker, Irene Croker and Margaret Smith

Ettalong Memorial: Beverley Angus, Marion Young, Sheena Black and Pam Donnelly

Senior Fours:

Bateau Bay:  Colleen McArdle, Arlene Jackson, Shirley Graham and Rose Finch

Terrigal:  Julia Silvia, Tess Koutsoulis, Pam Colbran and Gwen Hardwick

The spectators were treated to top class bowls.

It was great to see so many spectators supporting their clubs.

In the Open Fours final Pam Donnelly’s team from Ettalong got away to a good start and seemed not to look back.  Their concentration and focus was superb.  Margaret Smith’s team from Avoca remained in touch and a constant threat until the second last end when Ettalong extended their lead to eight shots.  Margaret tried valiantly to keep the game alive but went down by 9 shots at the end of the match.  Final score was Ettalong 20, Avoca 11.  Super game to watch!

Gwen Hardwick and the Terrigal girls slugged it out with Rose Finch and the girls from Bateau Bay in the Senior Fours final.  The match was so remarkably even that going into the last end the score was 18 shots apiece.  Anybody’s game! As always there has to be a winner and it emerged that Gwen and her Terrigal team were the winners by 1 shot from Rose and her team from Bateau Bay.   A great contest by determined competitors.

Congratulations to all four teams on their performance and sportsmanship.

District President Pat congratulated all the players and presented the winners with their badges and prizemoney and the runners up with their prizemoney.    President Judith from Gosford City and her ladies were thanked for their hospitality.

What a great week of bowls with lovely weather and superb bowling.
